21 October 2026 | Liverpool City Centre | Dry Riser Repairs & Maintenance
A damaged drain valve may appear to be a relatively minor issue, but when it forms part of a dry riser breeching inlet, it can lead to more extensive remedial work. Dry Riser One Ltd recently completed a full 2-way dry riser breeching inlet replacement at a commercial property in Liverpool city centre after a defective drain valve was identified during routine dry riser servicing↗︎.
The initial inspection identified a fault that required further attention. You can read more about the original servicing visit and the findings in our Liverpool↗︎ dry riser servicing case study. During the initial site visit, our engineers discovered that the red operating handwheel on the drain valve had been completely snapped off, leaving the valve inoperable. This meant the dry riser system could not be drained using its designated drain valve following routine pressure testing or emergency use.
Without a functioning drain valve, water could remain trapped within the pipework, potentially creating further maintenance issues and affecting the system's readiness for future use. Our engineers carried out a complete replacement of the existing 2-way breeching inlet, incorporating a new, fully operational drain valve to restore the required drainage functionality.
This type of work forms part of our specialist dry riser remedial↗︎ services, which address damaged components and defective equipment identified during routine inspections and testing.
Why a Damaged Dry Riser Drain Valve Matters
Dry riser systems are designed to provide firefighters with a means of delivering water to designated points within a building during an emergency. For further information about how these systems operate, visit our dry riser↗︎ systems overview. Drain valves also serve an important purpose. They allow water to be released from the system following pressure testing or operational use.
When a drain valve becomes damaged or inoperable, the system may no longer be capable of draining through its intended discharge point or retaining water in the system in the case of an emergency. In this particular case, the operating handwheel had snapped off, preventing the valve from being operated normally.
The defect required remedial attention to ensure the dry riser inlet arrangement could be maintained and operated correctly.
Complete 2-Way Breeching Inlet Replacement
Following the identification of the damaged drain valve, our engineers returned to the Liverpool property to undertake the necessary dry riser repair and replacement works. The existing 2-way breeching inlet assembly was disconnected from the system pipework and carefully removed.
A complete replacement of the 2-way breeching inlet was then installed, incorporating:
Two fire service inlet connections.
Protective blank caps with retaining chains.
A replacement drain valve.
A new red operating handwheel.
Associated fittings and connections.
The replacement inlet was fitted within the existing dry riser cabinet and connected to the building's dry riser system. The newly installed part provided a replacement drain valve that could be operated normally, addressing the original defect.
The photographs show the original damaged inlet, the removed assembly and the newly installed 2-way breeching inlet.
Dry Riser One Ltd uses dry riser components manufactured in accordance with BS 5041 Part 3: 1975. For further technical details and a full product description, please visit the link below:

The Importance of Dry Riser Inspection and Pressure Testing
Regular dry riser inspection and pressure testing plays an important role in identifying damaged valves and other defects that may affect a system's reliability.
Under BS 9990:2015, recommendations are provided for the design, installation, testing and maintenance of non-automatic firefighting systems in buildings, including dry risers. Routine inspections should consider the condition of key dry riser parts, including breeching inlets, drain valves, landing valves, protective caps and associated fittings. Hydraulic pressure testing is also used to assess the integrity of the system under pressure.
Our dry riser servicing guide↗︎ provides further information about routine inspections, pressure testing and maintenance requirements. The UK Government also provides guidance for persons responsible for fire safety, including the importance of inspection, maintenance and addressing identified defects. Where damage is discovered, the appropriate remedial works should be undertaken and any necessary follow-up testing completed.
Professional Dry Riser Repairs in Liverpool and Across the UK
The Liverpool project demonstrates why even a relatively small dry riser part, such as a drain valve operating handwheel, should not be overlooked during routine maintenance. By removing the existing 2-way breeching inlet and installing a new breeching inlet our engineers addressed the damaged drain valve and provided a renewed inlet arrangement.
Dry Riser One Ltd provides specialist dry riser services for commercial properties, residential developments, hotels and other buildings throughout the UK. Our services include dry riser servicing, hydraulic pressure testing, dry riser remedials and dry riser installations. Whether a building requires a replacement breeching inlet, damaged drain valve repair or further investigation following a failed inspection, our engineers can assess the condition of the equipment and recommend suitable remedial work.
