Dry Riser Installation in Nottingham – Marshall Street, Sherwood
Dry Riser One Ltd has successfully completed a dry riser installation in Nottingham at Marshall Street, Sherwood providing a practical firefighting water-supply solution designed around the particular access restrictions of the property.
This Nottingham dry riser project is a good example of why a dry riser is not always required simply because of the height of a building. At Marshall Street, the key challenge was fire service access and hose-laying distance.
The project fire strategy identified that the distance from Fire & Rescue Service vehicle hardstanding to the furthest point of Flat 4 was expected to be approximately 59 metres. The driveway serving the development was too narrow for a fire appliance because of the existing neighbouring walls. The fire strategy therefore called for the hose-laying distance to be reduced to below 45 metres.
Dry Riser One supplied, installed, tested and commissioned an external dry riser to provide the required solution.
The installation was completed on 19 August 2026 and the completed system consists of one dry riser system, one inlet valve and one outlet valve, positioned externally along the right-hand side of the driveway.
Why Was a Dry Riser Required at Marshall Street, Nottingham?
One of the most interesting aspects of this dry riser installation in Nottingham was the reason behind the system. The premises was formerly a light-industrial unit and was undergoing adaptation as part of a wider development incorporating residential accommodation and associated office areas. The fire strategy identified a significant practical issue for firefighters.
Although vehicle access to Marshall Street itself was available, a fire appliance could not travel down the property's narrow driveway into the shared courtyard. The anticipated hose-laying distance from the fire appliance hardstanding to the furthest part of the development was approximately 59 metres.
Rather than requiring firefighters to run an excessively long hose from the street, the proposed arrangement placed the dry riser inlet on the Fire & Rescue Service access side of the entrance gate and positioned the outlet further along the approximately 20-metre driveway.
This allowed that distance to be effectively bridged by permanent firefighting pipework. According to the fire strategy, the arrangement reduced the maximum hose distance from the outlet to Flat 4 to approximately 40 metres.
That is an important point.
At this Nottingham property, that meant overcoming a physical access restriction created by the existing building layout.
The Dry Riser Solution
Following review of the project information, Dry Riser One was appointed to carry out the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the new system at Marshall Street.
This made the system effectively a firefighting extension along the restricted driveway.
The inlet provides the connection point for the Fire & Rescue Service. During an emergency, firefighters can connect their pumping appliance to the breeching inlet and charge the dry riser system with water. The water is then carried through the fixed pipework to the outlet positioned closer to the building.
Instead of firefighters having to lay the full hose distance from Marshall Street, they have a dedicated connection point significantly closer to the areas they may need to reach.
It is a relatively compact dry riser installation, but one with a very specific and important purpose.
Dry Riser Installation to BS 9990:2015
Compliance was central to the Nottingham project. The Dry Riser One project documentation specified that the installation was to be carried out in accordance with BS 9990:2015 and current Building Regulations.
The installation specification included galvanised steel pipework, a male-threaded landing valve, drain provision, appropriate dry riser identification signage, air release valves and fixings.
The completed Certificate of Compliance records the system location as the right-hand side of the driveway, with one landing valve and one system/inlet. It also confirms that the dry riser was installed and commissioned in line with BS 9990:2015.

Installation is not the only part of the job. Once the pipework and valves had been installed, the dry riser system needed to be pressure tested and commissioned before handover.
